check it out {of the library}:

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Modern day fiction about a girl raised in Foster homes and her struggles throughout life. She learns about the Victorian Era language of flowers and that becomes a huge part of her life. I finished it in two days. An easy read but very emotional and moving.
Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. The true story of a man's experience after Hurricane Katrina when he decided not to evacuate in order to look after several properties he owned. Quite an unbelievable story and so hard to believe this happened in the US only a few years ago.
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese: A set of twin boys raised in Ethiopia by their two doctor parents. Its interwoven with what medicine and hospitals were really like in that country at the time. Its a fascinating and emotional novel. The beginning was a bit slow and choppy so just forewarning to keep plugging along. And if you like that book, read My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira. Also historical fiction about a midwife hoping to be one of the first female nurses set in the US during the Civil War. A bit slow in parts but also great.
The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer: The life story of a young Jewish man who got an amazing opportunity to leave his home country of Hungary to study Architecture in Paris and the destruction of all of his dreams at the start of WWII.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls: A memoir of a girl raised by her parents in complete poverty in the US. I loved this book so much, I could hardly put it down. And when i had to, I thought about it until I could pick it up again.
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand: An epic biography of an Olympic athlete who's dreams of a gold medal were crushed with the start of World War II. His story of survival after his plane goes down in teh Pacific is unrivaled. I'm deeming this my 'book of the year'. Yep, its only January. A MUST read!
Breaking Night by Liz Muray: An amazing memoir of a woman who was raised by two crack addicts for parents, was homeless in the Bronx as a teenager and managed to go to Harvard. Absoluely loved her story of triumph. Made me remember how much I loved Blackbird by Jennifer Lauck. Read that too if you haven't already.
Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah: The second half of the book left me completely enraptured learning about Russia during the Cold War...something I'd never read about before. It switches back and forth between the modern day struggles in the lives of three women and a fairy tale illustrating life during the seize of Leningrad.
